From Compliance to Confidence

Evidence creates confidence.
Confidence creates sales.

Compliance is fundamental to the fenestration industry, but it should never be reduced to a certificate in a technical file.

Standards, testing, and certification establish whether a product or doorset has met defined requirements. Their wider value is the confidence that evidence can create: confidence for the fabricator making the specification, the installer standing behind the finished door, and the homeowner trusting it to protect their home.

Used well, compliance is not simply a route to market. It becomes part of the reason a customer chooses one doorset over another.

Security remains a purchasing driver

Homeowners may first be drawn to a door by its appearance, but security remains central to the buying decision. Recent Keystone research commissioned by Winkhaus found that, among respondents who identified security frustrations with their current doors, 58.5% wanted better locks.

What “secure” means, however, is changing.

The traditional focus has been physical attack: can the doorset, lock, cylinder, and protective hardware resist recognised methods of forced entry? That remains essential. But when smart access is introduced, homeowners also want to know what protects the connected element.

Could somebody scan the signal outside the house? Can an access code be copied? Could the app or cloud service be compromised? What happens to permissions and personal data?

These are not reasons to avoid smart technology. They are reasonable questions from consumers being asked to trust it with the entrance to their home. Telling them simply that a product is secure is no longer enough. Confidence must be supported by evidence.

Evidence answers the difficult questions

This is where independent assessment matters. IASME IoT Cyber Assurance is designed to assess connected devices against recognised cyber security controls. At Level 2, the scope includes a hands-on audit and considers the device, associated app, hub, and cloud service it relies upon.

For sales teams, this turns a complex technical discussion into a clear customer benefit. Polaris uses AES-256, one of the strongest forms of the internationally recognised AES encryption standard, widely used to protect sensitive information across finance, government, and defence. It offers a familiar point of reference without requiring the homeowner to understand the technology behind it.

Andy Meakin, Sales Director at Winkhaus UK, explains: “When people hear ‘smart door’, they naturally ask whether the signal, codes, or cloud can be compromised. Being able to explain that Polaris uses AES-256 gives customers a simple comparison with the level of security they already trust in services such as online banking. Supported by independent assessment, that changes the conversation.”

Understanding what has been tested

The same principle applies to mechanical security. A certificate is valuable, but confidence depends on understanding what it covers.
An individually compliant component does not automatically create a compliant complete door. Performance depends on the tested configuration and how the lock, cylinder, protective hardware, door, and frame interact.

The better question is not simply, “Is this product compliant?” It is: “What was tested, in which configuration, against which requirement, and does that evidence support the doorset being supplied?”

Justin Harris, Managing Director at Winkhaus UK, says: “We would never bring a solution like Crafted Synergy to market unless we had complete confidence in every aspect of its performance. Testing doesn’t simply satisfy standards. It protects our customers’ reputation.”

Turning technical confidence into commercial confidence

Crafted Synergy brings physical and digital security evidence into one coordinated proposition. Its mechanical foundation supports PAS 24:2022 + A1:2024 and TS007 security requirements, while Polaris has been developed and tested around IASME Level 1 and Level 2 IoT security requirements.

The commercial value lies in translating that evidence into outcomes homeowners understand. PAS 24 becomes reassurance against recognised methods of attack. Layered cylinder protection becomes greater protection around a vulnerable area of the door. IoT assessment becomes confidence that the smart element, app, and supporting services have been considered together.

That clarity reduces perceived purchase risk. It gives sales teams stronger answers, makes the smart proposition easier to trust, supports reputation, and can make the decision to buy easier.
Compliance provides the evidence. Confidence is what turns that evidence into a stronger doorset proposition.
